MAP and Crohn’s Disease –
Is there a Link?

Back

Today over 500,000 Americans suffer from Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease is a painful disease that affects the intestinal tract in humans. The disease usually is found in people ages 15 to 25, so most scientist have called it the young people’s disease. Scientists are still trying to pinpoint the exact thing that causes Crohn’s, and they just might be getting closer to figuring out what causes it.

Researchers believe that MAP (Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis) is the cause of Crohn’s disease. Researchers also believe that the way that MAP is getting into people is through cattle products such as milk and cheese from cows. MAP can survive pasteurization, which is how it still gets into us.

Researchers are still not 100% sure if it is the exact cause though, but there is evidence that MAP is the leading cause of most cases of Crohn’s disease. Our children are getting infected with this disease right under our noses. Researchers need all the help they can get with proving that MAP is the cause so that we can finally start curing people of this painful disease.

While scientists and researchers are getting closer to an answer, they have also been developing cures for if their research comes out correct. This is good; it means that if researchers are right, then our problem with Crohn’s disease could finally come to an end.

MAP has been found in people that suffer from Crohn’s disease; this evidence alone should be enough to persuade most people into believing that researchers are getting closer to finding out if it is the true cause, or just a coincidence.  Even the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the U.S. National Institutes of Health have taken some action in helping a group known as PARA in finding out the truth and answering the questions of people who suffer from Crohn’s and their families questions.

The people who suffer from Crohn’s are in pain and discomfort because of it, and the sooner we find a cure the sooner they can be relieved from the pain and discomfort of Crohn’s.
