Myoconda – Treatment For Crohn’s (by stopping MAP)
Last week we did an article on a bacteria called MAP and research against this string of bacteria as a possible treatment for Crohn’s Disease. Well, this week, thanks to a comment left on the CrohnsHelp blog by Adam, I was referred to a medication called, Myoconda.
It was actually pretty hard doing much research on this drug because it seems that the U.S. is not very supportive of this entire research project. It is an Australian company that is performing all the clinical trials and is responsible for helping Myocondia through Phase III of trials.
The company website claims that the drug will be ready for commercial launch in the U.S. some time in 2008. Just so you know, they are having very high success rate with their trials – putting Crohn’s patients into remission who are even unresponsive to Remicade. From the reading it seems that, Myoconda is actually for more severe level patients anyways.
Here’s a quote from their own site:
“Myoconda, the Company’s therapy for the treatment of Crohn’s Disease, is a combination of three registered antibiotics - rifabutin, clarithromycin, and clofazimine. These three drugs are widely marketed individually for the treatment of mycobacterial and other infections. Myoconda, for the first time, presents these three compounds in a specific, patented combination.
Myoconda is based on the proposition that Crohn’s Disease is caused by infection. Prof. Borody has long been at the forefront of this approach, which is gaining increasing acceptance among gastrointestinal specialists worldwide.
Prof. Borody has published significant data demonstrating that patients treated with Myoconda’s antibiotic combination experience long-term remission of clinical symptoms and inflammation, some for up to five years.”

A Yummy Yogurt That Helps
Once again thanks to the generous post at the blog by another reader, I was turned to a yogurt called “Activia” – made by Dannon. Now, of course we are not doctors and you should consult your physician before trying the yogurt. However, the patient reported that the yogurt helps.
When I looked into the yogurt I found that it has probiotics in it and is being marketed as a yogurt to help regulate digestion. For those of you who don’t know, probiotics are “good bacteria” and there has been much research promoting that probiotics are beneficial for Crohn’s patients. Jordan Rubin and his “Garden of Life” therapy is also based on some form of probiotics.
