Crohn’s Disease May Be Cause By an Infection Found in Animal Produced Food Products

Back

Approximately 500,000 Americans are afflicted with the chronic and debilitating disease of the intestinal tract known as Crohn’s disease.  This painful, highly inflammatory and sometimes deadly disease primarily afflicts the very young -- usually between the age of 15 and 25.  Researchers have recently targeted MAP (Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis) as a correlating factor in the development of Crohn’s.  Recent finding suggest that MAP is passed on to humans from cattle derived food products.

MAP in cattle causes Johne’s Disease.  This pathogenic bacterium can be found in numerous animals including sheep, deer, llamas and bison.  The symptoms of MAP in cattle are very similar to those of Crohn’s disease in humans.  Studies suggest that Johne’s disease is becoming more widespread in cattle, and recent figures show that Crohn’s disease is becoming more prevalent.

Milk from Johne’s Disease infected dairy cattle has been found to contain MAP.  Pasteurization does not always rid milk of MAP.  Bacteriologic cultures from Crohn’s patients have been found to contain MAP.  DNA And RNA probes in Crohn’s patients have found MAP in the patients’ systems.  MAP found in these DNA and RNA probes has been proven to be of Bovine (cattle) origin.

Does MAP cause Crohn’s?  Can further study help establish a definitive correlation between Johne’s Disease and Crohn’s?  These are important questions affecting all of us.  Mad Cow may not be\n the only issue we need to address in dealing with cattle derivative food products

CONSUMERS SHOULD BE MADE AWARE THAT MAD COW IS NOT THE ONLY ANIMAL DISEASE THAT CAN BE PASSED ON TO HUMANS

Recent studies have suggested that MAP (Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis) may be the culprit in the recent rise of Crohn’s Disease.  Crohn’s is an inflammatory disease that affects approximately 500, 000 Americans, usually in the 15 to 25 year-old age bracket.

One of the most startling discoveries is that Crohn’s patients who are given anti-mycobaterial drugs, which are effective in controlling MAP, go into remission.  Studies suggest that 80% of Crohn’s patients on anti-mycobaterial drug therapy go into remission.

Does MAP cause Crohn’s?  Can further study help establish a definitive correlation between Johne’s Disease and Crohn’s?  These are important questions affecting all of us.
