not sure if this is the right section, but i figured it would be. i keep hearing conflicting reports that it is and isn't genetic. personally, i can't find anyone in my family tree that has crohn's disease or any form of IBD for that matter...

how about you guys, do other people in your family have crohn's too?

I did a survey a long time ago of about 1000 people
who had Crohn's. About 200 responded and the results
came out like 18% to show genetic following.

The research shows about 20% so it was fairly consistent..

Brian -

I've had Crohn's disease for 14 years. During that time, I've asked various relatives if anyone else has this - no one said yes. However, last summer I found out that my great aunt had it and now one of her son's has it also. Also, my uncle also has it - all on the maternal side. So, why didn't I know before? I believe it is because this is a disease that alot of people just don't talk about!

Hey Jeanne,

You're absolutely right. I sure don't like talking about
it at the dinner table! But, wow, good findings...

The closest I have gotten is to know that one of my
cousins (mom's eldest sister's brother) has some
"stomach problems" - that is as close to anything that
I have found...

You'd think people would have spoken up about it if
they had it when I was dying in the hospital (I know a
family friend though who has it - but of course that is
not genetic).

I agree - you would THINK that people would talk about it. I cannot understand the secrecy that is created in some families! Maybe that is one reason why Crohn's does not have a known cause or cure. I don't know - could be embarrassment - some things I just have to shake my head over Confused

Hey,

Yeap, but unfortunately it's getting so wide spread now that
people are HAVING to talk about it (I mean, this is good for
US, I guess bad that it's spreading so much).

But, when I first had it and I told someone, they'd say "Cro what?"

Now, I consistently get people saying "O...my cousin has that,
or my friend has that..."

I think it's starting to get the attention it needs...

Hey all...I am the only person in my family with Crohn's. I think, for those of us that did not inherit it, it's a developed world disease. My stomach problems did not start until I started eating an 'American' diet (all the fake made up stuff) and it got worse in college when I had fewer opportunities to consume healthy, organic, balanced meals Confused

Hey,

Yeap, that would explain also why it's much more evident
in Western cultures and is increasing in those countries that
are adapting to Westen ways like India.
